The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines food insecurity as a lack of consistent access to enough food for active, healthy life (Understand Food Insecurity, n.d.). It is generally accepted that the contributing factor is climate change. Mother nature's message about our planet's poor stewardship has led us to calamities and miseries with degradation of the environment and inequities in accessing nutritious food. Before addressing food insecurity, good stewardship of the land must take priority while economic profitability is realized through responsible farming methods.
Human ingenuity has made great strides to feed the hungry world without the forethought of destruction, intentional or unintentional, to our environment. Our ability to envision and invent things is a double-edged sword. We managed to bring comfort and convenience to our lives. We no longer must forage the land or hunt for food – we go to the supermarket. The consequences of the abundance do not come without a price. Our land, sea, air, and the human body have been negatively impacted by the imbalance of our constructs.
We can no longer ignore the predicament of our detrimental creations if we are to bring harmony to ourselves and the world. The good news is that we can reverse the damage done with human brilliance and resourcefulness. Sustainable agriculture such as aquaponics, organic farming, integrated pest management are few methods now practiced which are less tolling to our health and environment.
Addressing food insecurity will be a challenge, and good stewardship of the land is a more significant challenge during economic profitability for the food industry. A whole mindset has to shift as ingenious minds create inventions to favor the human race and their surroundings for the current and future generations.
